Russell Crowe (not) to play Steve Irwin

September 29th 2006 09:40
In the first Cinematrix bungle, reports indicating Russell Crowe's ambition to play Steve Iriwn in a biopic have been quashed. In seizing the opportunity so quickly after the 'Wildlife Warrior's' sudden departure, Cinematrix was concerned that the ode - while promotion-worthy and kind-hearted - was un-sentimentally too soon. Crowe told a US interview show "Extra" that, "It's appalling to me... ...(It) offends me very deeply, so awful that I have to deal with millions of people thinking I would dance on my friend's grave". (smh.com.au)

I for one am relieved of this notice both in terms of not sensationalising Steve Irwins tragic passing and that Russell Crowe can and will deter from making any kind of biopic of Irwin, at least from the near future.

Lastly, I'd like to apologise to readers for the misinformation and endeavour to look to more credible sources for the latest news and goss on the film industry.
Bye for now!

Cate Blanchett to play Bob Dylan

September 28th 2006 05:35
Todd Haynes (Far From Heaven, Velvet Goldmine) is going to direct a film based on the singer/songwriter legend Bob Dylan titled "I'm not there", casting the female Cate Blanchett in the lead. Now, nothing against one of the best - if not the best - Australian actresses, but performing as an actor and additionally a singer too? Well, the resemblance isn't that far off at all! (See below)
Cate Blanchett's transformation to Bob Dylan

The kookyness doesn't stop here however. Along with Blanchett to play as Dylan (who recently turned 65 this week) 6 other actor/ess' are similarly playing the lead at various stages throughout the singers life and subsequent film progression. Though the number and names attached to the title are disputed and frequently changing, it should add to between 5-7. So far these include Adrien Brody, Christian Bale, Richard Gere, Julianne Moore, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Heath Ledger. Colin Farrell was previously going to star as Dylan in his 1970's period but dropped out. Other actors and actresses which have been associated with the movie (but at this time it's not been revealed if they will star as Dylan as well) include Michelle Williams, David Cross and Ben Wishaw.
Bob Dylans many new faces

Surely the alarm bells would be going off like a meltdown cacophany to a nuclear reactor for the studio to allow all these actors and actresses to be involved. And quite rightly the claim that all this artistic license has gotten out of control. "But it's the first time Bob Dylan has given approval to a film based on his life". (nme.com) And surely this must be some kind of 'means to an end' process to allow the film to happen. Haynes clarifies; "he (Dylan) continues to move forward by discarding himself, so my idea is to put together a film of multiple characters and tell their stories simultaneously. It's going to be weird, not a traditional narrative by any means." (telegraph.co.uk)

Additionally Dylan has said to be that keen on this venture he is giving Haynes access to his complete musical back catalogue spanning decades and decades and hours on hours of music. Furthermore, "... the singer is also relinquishing his half of the publishing income to keep the budget down to £13.2 million". (telegraph.co.uk)
Reports indicate shooting has begun in Montreal since mid 2006.

Russell Crowe to play Steve Irwin in Film

September 26th 2006 00:51
Hot off the presses is the allegation that Russell Crowe wants to play Steve Irwin in a biopic of his life. From the ceremonial speech he delivered along with Hugh Jackman at the Australia Park ceremonial memorial of Irwin, Russell gave an unusually heartfelt ode to the 'Wildlife Warrior', and I amongst others wondered whether it was a performance or rather genuine.
Can this man be Steve Irwin?

It seems to be genuine however as Crowe is in talks with Universal Pictures to make it happen. "We've all lost a friend, we've lost a champion, and we're going to take some time to adjust to that." (smh.com.au) The question is, can the Gladiator actor inspire the same amount of excitment and authenticity to which Irwin espoused and can we see a type of dignity in the Cinderella Man, coupled with a gentleness of A Beautiful Mind to pull this one off. One thing is for sure that he would be appropriate in regards to throwing himself into the role that required a rough and ready actor without the upper lip to scoff at the antics of Steve Irwins Aussie legend status

Why has it never worked?

We have adaptations from comics, autobiography’s, cartoons, television series, books, paintings, poems etc that all work successively in terms of critics or the audiences praise, but not for adapting games to movies

Do movie sequels work?

September 13th 2006 00:30
Well, according to IMDB’s stats for the “All-Time Worldwide” box office sales it does!
Lord of the Rings 3
Ranked 2nd worldwide

A staggering 7 out of the top 10 films were sequels raking in more than $866,000,000 not including rentals, DVD buys and other miscellaneous promotional purchases. Out of the top 3 films were 2 sequels that grossed over A BILLION DOLLARS! What are these popular sequels you ask? Admittedly you’ll probably guess them. They’re all franchises and from the Harry Potter, Star Wars and Lord of the Rings license. Makes perfect sense now - almost common sense. Surprises included the Pirates of the Caribbean sequel (Dead Mans Chest) doing better than the first (Curse of the Black Pearl) and Shrek 2 being more lucrative than Shrek.
Pirates of the Carribean2
Ranked 3rd worldwide

"Match Point" DVD Review

September 11th 2006 00:04
*Exhale* After seeing this film you really do need to take a few breaths to rid yourself of the nervous tension that slowly creeps up on you. This is a gripping thriller that relentlessly turns up the heat and leaves you hollowed from an experience of first-hand murder, deceit and infidelity. If you’re looking for an easy-going perv at Scarlett Johansson or an entertaining and irreverent comedy on everyday life from Woody Allen, then you’ve picked up the wrong dvd case.

Film Industry's Tell-all-book

September 7th 2006 03:04
A new book by screenwriter of “Basic Instinct”, “Flashdance” and “Showgirls”, Joe Eszterhas has wrote an adaptation of the big screen the stars won’t ever want to read. This tell-all book describes the behaviours of such leading actors and actresses as Sharon Stone, Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro and Val Kilmer on-set that’s sure to create some controversy. The crew working on these films lashed out at the screen stars (especially Stone) in such a way a feral cat would be proud of.
No one gets out unscathed

This includes the crew being so aggravated by Sharon Stone they "relieved themselves into a bathtub before Sharon got into it for her scene." (…!)

Pirates of the Carribbean: At Worlds End

September 4th 2006 03:00
The third instalment of the Pirates trilogy is on its way, due for release in May next year. It picks up where No.2 left off and all the cast are back for the big finish. Orlando Bloom plays Will Turner; Johnny Depp is the legendary Captain Jack Sparrow; Elizabeth Swan is played by Kiera Knightly and Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa. The rest of the cast also return, as well as a cameo from Keith Richards as Jack’s father. Johnny Depp claimed that the Rolling Stones guitarist was the inspiration for Sparrow’s unusual mannerisms. So who else could you cast as Sparrow’s father but Keith?
Chow Yun-Fat will play Captain Sao Feng, the leader of a new band of villains, apparently bigger and badder than anything we’ve seen so far.

A Welcome Return to the Dark Ages

September 3rd 2006 03:00
Ladies and Gentlemen: welcome back the age of the horror film. Not since the bloodcurdling days when Spielberg’s horror incited a phobia amongst every beachgoer and Hitchcock ceased thousands of showers; have we been infatuated with experiencing heart-stopping terror. Recently the genre has experienced a lull with a string of B-grade movies failing to impress audiences, but it seems our spines are, once again, ice cold with several chilling pieces now currently circulating our nervous system.

This years film ‘Hostel’ is, quite simply, one long horrific sexual encounter laced with a terrifying plot. If the R18 rating doesn’t give it away, the droves of young males en-route to the video store may hint at the target audience.
