Russell Crowe to play Steve Irwin in Film
September 26th 2006 00:51
Hot off the presses is the allegation that Russell Crowe wants to play Steve Irwin in a biopic of his life. From the ceremonial speech he delivered along with Hugh Jackman at the Australia Park ceremonial memorial of Irwin, Russell gave an unusually heartfelt ode to the 'Wildlife Warrior', and I amongst others wondered whether it was a performance or rather genuine.
It seems to be genuine however as Crowe is in talks with Universal Pictures to make it happen. "We've all lost a friend, we've lost a champion, and we're going to take some time to adjust to that." (smh.com.au) The question is, can the Gladiator actor inspire the same amount of excitment and authenticity to which Irwin espoused and can we see a type of dignity in the Cinderella Man, coupled with a gentleness of A Beautiful Mind to pull this one off. One thing is for sure that he would be appropriate in regards to throwing himself into the role that required a rough and ready actor without the upper lip to scoff at the antics of Steve Irwins Aussie legend status.
In other news, Lou Diamond Phillips has been charged for domestic abuse to his girlfriend who called 911 from a locked bathroom during the alleged altercation. If convicted he will find himself owing $2000 in misdeamonour fines and a year long stint in jail for this Young Gun.
While Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are rumoured to have split they still are obliged to meet filming responsibilities in India for a film based on the beheading of "Wall Street Journal" correspondent Daniel Pearl. The movie is called "A Mighty Heart" and is of the same name as the book from which it is adapted, written by the journalists widow Mariane Pearl. On a lesser note, seeing this pair should really give the gossip mags something to write about and confirm whether the A-list couple are real life Mr and Mrs Smiths' or just a case of this Girl, Interrupted who did Meet Joe Black dated him for awhile and then was Gone in Sixty Seconds.

Lastly, do you think Russell is going too far in trying to play Steve Irwin?
Do you think he would do a good job?

What should sadden the Irwin family is that more people will probably watch this film ABOUT Steve Irwin than the one that actually had him in it.

Also a valid point; hopefully though there will be enough advertising and disclaimers about the film to nurture the audience back to the real thing including Steve himself, what he worked for and his legacy and not just the representational entertainment from which it comes.
