CINEMATRIX - by LuckyWill

Cinematrix is movie goer central bringing everything from the Big Screen to your screen.
In an exclusive - noted many months ago - Cinematrix brought you the first glimpses both textual and photographic of Aussie actress playing folk god Bob Dylan in a new movie biopic.
Well, readers, she unveiled similar plans at the Venice Film Festival earlier this week, under the title "I'm Not There", directed by Todd Haynes (Velvet Goldmine). The premiere featured other Hollywood heavyweights lending contributions to Dylan throughout distinct parts of his life. These include Richard Gere, Christian Bale and Heath Ledger.
However, it was our very own Cate whose performance stole the show apparently.

"Critics agree... Blanchett is the most convincing, her appearance transformed by wig and dark glasses and her walk and speaking voice almost uncannily like the original's." (www.smh.com.au)

How very odd, you may think. A talented female actress playing an iconic but mysterious male music legend. Seemingly, it's either an ode to the talents of each exclusively, or one that somehow showcases both of their abilities to surpass conventional gender stereotyping. Furthermore, it works. Well.

Could this start a new trend of gender-swapping portrayls in cinema? Reminscent of Virginia Wolf's book "Orlando" and Hilary Swanks masquerade as a young male in a small predjudiced American town in "Boys Don't Cry", we may be watching the tip of an iceberg about to emerge into more feature films on gender as irrespective to character.

After all, it is about representation, right?

Reading the Sunday paper today I was shocked to learn about a documentary that not only opposes Al Gores famous An Inconvenient Truth (AIT) but tries to wholeheartedly refute it. It's called The Great Global Warming Swindle (TGGWS) and likely has as many staunch partisan supporters from the other end of the spectrum as does AIT.

Now, I'm no scientist (though have spent time in a lab for academic research on rats) but clearly I'm just caught up in the massive groundswell that has become a major issue quite recently. I've seen the photos of pre-existing waterfalls, rainforests and the statistics on an incline of termperature and all the rest Gore has to offer - but what I can't say is that this has been caused from a single, direct result of environmental pollution that humans are causing and nothing else besides. Consequently from his argument, I'm taking his words as an authority to which seem reasonable enough and also quite believable to an extent.

However, if I was stopped in the street to speak on the issue all I could give was a circular argument. Being that, pollution is changing the globe at a rapid rate, pollution is bad, there's an influx of things either going missing or being outright destroyed and this is because of pollution. Therefore, pollution which is bad is changing the globe due to the detrimental things that are happening. I'm really only re-stating the premise to offer as a conclusion. What do I know for certain that isn't expressed by people (admittedly scientists) that haven't already been vouched for?

This documentary (probably much maligned like that of AIT) forces a heavy-heanded approach to the issue without reservation for decisive, empirically based testing and careful, even deliberation. It will be screening in Australia on the ABC in June sometime and should hopefully provide for a reconsideration if nothing else than just a piece of propaganda. Though it's doubtful.

Co founder and critic of greenie issues Patrick Moore (not Michael's brother) had these very interesting things to say about IAT and the climate change theory.

"(IAT is) ...how a theory about climate turned into a political ideology... ...a story of censorship and intimidation... ...of the distortion of a whole area of science... ...a cautionary tale of how a media scare became the defining of a generation."
Miranda Devine, 2007

This, he attributes, is the most recent focus of extremists after "world communism failed, the Wall came down and a lot of peaceniks and political activists moved into the environmental movement bringing their neo-Marxism with them and learnt to use green language in a very clever way to cloak agendas that have more to do with anti-capitalism and anti-globalisation than... ...ecology and science."
Ibid

Could this in fact be the case?
Have we all been duped under caring and altruistic but misguided sentiments to further a cause that at it's roots is a socialist and neo-Marxist banner of propaganda?
Even if this isn't the case at all, pondering on it for a moment is still highly alarming.

Even moreso alarming as an ideology that nearly everyone subscribes to as a deductive theory due to what other people have said (from both sides) but no one really knows for certain.

Xmas Holiday Movies for Kids 06

December 17th 2006 21:33
Now approaching the holidays where the joy of parlaying the kids off to someone elses responsiblity (school) is closely coming to an end the question begs, how to entertain them before they break something while under your responsiblity? Sure they can entertain themselves infrequently or play at their friends but inevitably there will be times when they or you will need a 2 hour timeout with some decent movies. So, I've compiled a list of good films to see at the cinemas throughout the Christmas break.

In a match that rivals Jordan vs Bird, Twain vs Dickens, Marc Antony vs Julius Caesar, Hitler vs Churchill, or even a Pacino vs De Niro; we're seeing the likes of the latin floosy from "Desperate Housewives" be paired with the black superstar who flooses herself between film and music entertainment. These two have recently revealed they will be starring in roles from an adaption of Sarah Waters book, "Tipping the Velvet". Yet, these two aren't pairing off in a duel or contest for spotlight focus, flipping their hair, pouting or looking their desirable selves, this match-up will be one of compassion where each plays a lover to the other.

Russell Crowe (not) to play Steve Irwin

September 29th 2006 09:40
In the first Cinematrix bungle, reports indicating Russell Crowe's ambition to play Steve Iriwn in a biopic have been quashed. In seizing the opportunity so quickly after the 'Wildlife Warrior's' sudden departure, Cinematrix was concerned that the ode - while promotion-worthy and kind-hearted - was un-sentimentally too soon. Crowe told a US interview show "Extra" that, "It's appalling to me... ...(It) offends me very deeply, so awful that I have to deal with millions of people thinking I would dance on my friend's grave". (smh.com.au)

I for one am relieved of this notice both in terms of not sensationalising Steve Irwins tragic passing and that Russell Crowe can and will deter from making any kind of biopic of Irwin, at least from the near future

Cate Blanchett to play Bob Dylan

September 28th 2006 05:35
Todd Haynes (Far From Heaven, Velvet Goldmine) is going to direct a film based on the singer/songwriter legend Bob Dylan titled "I'm not there", casting the female Cate Blanchett in the lead. Now, nothing against one of the best - if not the best - Australian actresses, but performing as an actor and additionally a singer too? Well, the resemblance isn't that far off at all! (See below)
Cate Blanchett's transformation to Bob Dylan

The kookyness doesn't stop here however. Along with Blanchett to play as Dylan (who recently turned 65 this week) 6 other actor/ess' are similarly playing the lead at various stages throughout the singers life and subsequent film progression. Though the number and names attached to the title are disputed and frequently changing, it should add to between 5-7. So far these include Adrien Brody, Christian Bale, Richard Gere, Julianne Moore, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Heath Ledger. Colin Farrell was previously going to star as Dylan in his 1970's period but dropped out. Other actors and actresses which have been associated with the movie (but at this time it's not been revealed if they will star as Dylan as well) include Michelle Williams, David Cross and Ben Wishaw.

Russell Crowe to play Steve Irwin in Film

September 26th 2006 00:51
Hot off the presses is the allegation that Russell Crowe wants to play Steve Irwin in a biopic of his life. From the ceremonial speech he delivered along with Hugh Jackman at the Australia Park ceremonial memorial of Irwin, Russell gave an unusually heartfelt ode to the 'Wildlife Warrior', and I amongst others wondered whether it was a performance or rather genuine.
Can this man be Steve Irwin?

It seems to be genuine however as Crowe is in talks with Universal Pictures to make it happen. "We've all lost a friend, we've lost a champion, and we're going to take some time to adjust to that." (smh.com.au) The question is, can the Gladiator actor inspire the same amount of excitment and authenticity to which Irwin espoused and can we see a type of dignity in the Cinderella Man, coupled with a gentleness of A Beautiful Mind to pull this one off. One thing is for sure that he would be appropriate in regards to throwing himself into the role that required a rough and ready actor without the upper lip to scoff at the antics of Steve Irwins Aussie legend status

Film Industry's Tell-all-book

September 7th 2006 03:04
A new book by screenwriter of “Basic Instinct”, “Flashdance” and “Showgirls”, Joe Eszterhas has wrote an adaptation of the big screen the stars won’t ever want to read. This tell-all book describes the behaviours of such leading actors and actresses as Sharon Stone, Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro and Val Kilmer on-set that’s sure to create some controversy. The crew working on these films lashed out at the screen stars (especially Stone) in such a way a feral cat would be proud of.
No one gets out unscathed
Picture used from www.smh.com.au

This includes the crew being so aggravated by Sharon Stone they "relieved themselves into a bathtub before Sharon got into it for her scene." (…!)

Attn: Tom Cruise - You're fired!

August 25th 2006 10:13
Running from the fallout
This week movie studio "Paramount Pictures" decided not to renew their professional relationship with actor Tom Cruise, which sees the conclusion of their 14 year long partnership. However the philosophy behind this move is more interesting than the result, as there's so many reasons why this could have happened. So in response I’ll posit some possibilities..

1) Personal reasons
