The third instalment of the Pirates trilogy is on its way, due for release in May next year. It picks up where No.2 left off and all the cast are back for the big finish. Orlando Bloom plays Will Turner; Johnny Depp is the legendary Captain Jack Sparrow; Elizabeth Swan is played by Kiera Knightly and Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa. The rest of the cast also return, as well as a cameo from Keith Richards as Jack’s father. Johnny Depp claimed that the Rolling Stones guitarist was the inspiration for Sparrow’s unusual mannerisms. So who else could you cast as Sparrow’s father but Keith?
Chow Yun-Fat will play Captain Sao Feng, the leader of a new band of villains, apparently bigger and badder than anything we’ve seen so far.
So how did we get here.
Movie one ‘The Curse of the Black Pearl’ saw Jack Sparrow, the drunken has-been captain of the glorious war vessel, the Black Pearl; hunt down the crew of mutinous scoundrels who cast him from the only life he had ever known. The life of a pirate. Without Jack, the crew are now led by the prime conspirator, captain Barbossa, to steal a cursed chest of gold. After spending all the gold, the curse takes effect, turning them into undead monsters, incapable of emotion, physical satisfaction or death. Meanwhile Jack enlists the help of Will Turner, Elizabeth Swan and his own make-shift crew to lift the curse, kill the evil Barbossa, re-take the Black Pearl, and save the day.
Movie two ‘Dead Mans Chest’ saw captain Jack Sparrow run into trouble with Davy Jones himself. Jones is a bizarre freak of nature, more fish than man, who rules the ocean on The Flying Dutchman, a ship manned by a soulless crew. The story goes that he barters the souls of dying sailors for immortality aboard his ship. The longer they serve under him, the more they transform from men into creatures of the deep. We are told that Jack once made a barter with Davy Jones when the Black Pearl sank to the bottom of the ocean. In return for his soul, his ship would rise again for him to captain for many more years.
The reason why Jones lives for so long is because he keeps his heart locked away in a chest and keeps the key on his person at all times. Jack needs to find this chest and kill Jones before he himself is enslaved. Davy Jones also commands a giant squid known as the Kraken which swallows ships and, unfortunately, Jack Sparrow as well. His crew seek the help of the recently deceased Barbossa and must travel to the ends of the Earth if Jack Sparrow will ever live again.
In ‘Pirates of the Carribbean: At Worlds End’ Will Turner, Eliazabeth and Barbossa will join forces, travelling to the Orient to do battle with the evil Captain Sao Feng in order to retrieve a map to Davy Jones Locker, the sandy hell where Jack (and the Black Pearl) are being held prisoner. Will isn’t satisfied to just rescue Jack, he also wants to save the Pearl, since it’s the only ship capable of challenging the Flying Dutchman and, therefore, his only chance of rescuing his father. As for the rest of the film, you’ll just have to wait until next year to find out more.
Pirates 3 will be better than all the others. FX master John Knoll says “There's a lot of really interesting, cool stuff coming.”
Depp was asked, in an interview with Newsweek magazine, if Jack Sparrow could make a return even after Pirates 3 is released. He replied “If they had a good script, why not?”
