Opinions on "What About Brian"?

March 14th 2007 15:47

Like the show, love the show, don't really care or even worse - see the potenial in it, but regrettably understand the short-term formula it inherently has?

Well, you could feel somewhat all of the above in a sense as each descriptive analysis is valid. Aired on the ABC in America and Channel 7 in Australia, the show revolves around Brian O'Hara (played most notably by the eldest son from "7th Heaven") and his twenty-something meanderings in life negotiating with the 'grown-up' world and his place amongst married friends. And it's this increasing struggle with the above two elements that sees most of the short hour be divided between soft drama and comedy. While it is light-hearted and topical it disappointingly rarely breaches anything outside the comforts of superficial dalliances with true hardship which reflectively may be part of its charm. In the end you have the familiar feeling everything will somehow always turn out 'right' and as it should so viewing is enjoyable and careless.

That's not to say it doesn't deal with uncomfortable issues like being in love with your best friends partner (the basic premise for the show), pursuing IVF treatments at the decievement of your spouse. responsibly interacting inside relationships and ethics, and multiple partners within marriages when the 'honeymoon period' wanes. The latter topic is probably the most interesting and serves to justify what all else should be a forgettable B grade teen flick that's been made into a television series. How would you react if your partner whose also the other caregiver to your children had sexually wandering eyes but still wanted to maintain the relationship you are currently in? What could you really do? Accept begrudgingly, accomodate selfishly or turn a pained eye to the unfolding events? It's a tough predicament and one that is slowly becoming the main reason to watch before Marjorie (played by Sarah Lancaster) umms and ahhs over her long time friend Brian (Barry Watson) and what could possibly be if she breaks with her new fiancee and Brians best bud Adam (Matthew Davis)?

That's part of the excitement and tortoise-like pace which have me tuning in to see what conspires next, what form of subtle meaning unfolds that both Marjorie and Brian bear difficultly and ultimately what is the straw that breaks the engagement bands back.

Good to see you back Cinematrix,

As for the show, I lasted 10 minutes. found it repulsive..terrible actors, completely false feeling script and typical TV sitcom style production.

But Im even more picky about TV than movies.

Hey John, thanks man.

I admit, it is fairly saccharine and understandably avoidable but after watching it a few times with nothing else better to do I'm hooked.

Hook, line and sucker!

alot of our tv is ridiculously BAD here in America lol..Glad to see that it isn't any better where you are...Wonder why we all havta suffer through droll, boring, badly written and even worse acted television shows when they have the capacity to make really good stuff??

And when they DO come up with something with a lot of great potential, it's only runs long enoigh to get you really interested before they canel it! Grrr!

Great blog,

Take care,

Nick
